Brother Marcus has quickly become a Balham institution. This lively café/cocktail bar on Chestnut Grove is one of South London’s hottest brunch venues. No wonder then that Alex, Arthur and Tasos have decided to open a second, a few strides from Angel station.
We are here for dinner, as this Brother Marcus has a new “Night” menu leading on from their popular daytime classics. Maybe it was for this reason, that I feel this place is more sophisticated than it’s little brother.
Don’t get me wrong. This Marcus is as fun and vibrant as the food it serves, with big hitting Mediterranean flavours served on small plates. Plenty here to be vegan and vegetarian friendly. Cauliflower two ways, aubergine with tahini and pomegranate and courgette fritters with whipped feta, although I have to admit, my favourite had to be the cracked belly pork with walnuts!
Seriously bustling with diners lapping up this fresh cuisine and getting into some of their famous cocktails makes for a great atmosphere. The honey bombs to finish, washed down with a recommended house digestive. They don’t leave you wanting here.
You need to be confident of your concept and ability to open and survive in this part of town and there is no doubt these guys have the winning combination.
