For Caperberry, 2019 was a year of being inspired over and over (and over). From small independent brands to big labels making changes, the cobbled streets of Paris to the wilderness of Skye… From the juggle (well, beautiful chaos) of motherhood and running a business to family adventures, travelling with kids and food. Oh the food…
Here, we bring you some of our most loved, most read and most beautiful stories of 2019. I hope you enjoy them as much as we have loved making them.
In Conversation With Doula, Model & Mama, Shanay Hall
“I’m SO ready! I’ve been waiting a very long time for this that I could cry thinking about it. My daughter is 6 now and she is a little mother herself, I can’t wait to see her become a big sister – she is going to rock it. There has already been lots of questions as me and Iyla’s dad are not together, so her little head is questioning why is my current partner is the baby’s dad, she asked me “why can’t my dad be the dad?”

In Conversation With Amanda Woodward-Brown…
“One of my former bosses once described the juggle of work and motherhood as a swinging pendulum, which I’ve always thought is the perfect synonym. It’s impossible to ever achieve a perfect balance between work and being a parent. Sometimes work will take priority, other times your family. Also what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. You have to find what is best for you and your family and this constantly evolves as your children grow older or you change roles or companies.”

In Conversation With The Designer & Mama Behind Rococo Interiors & Furnishings
“I have been lucky to be surrounded by creativity from as early as I can remember and this has strongly influenced my style today. My upbringing was ‘fun chaos’ (I’m one of six!) and consisted of permanent visits to auction houses and trekking around car boot sales – it’s incredible how much valuable knowledge you pick up when you are young. My talented mother has always dealt antiques and had a tapestry business where she was commissioned to produce work for many notable designers and my father was an art dealer specialising in sporting prints, so you can say it’s in the genes.”

In Conversation With arkitaip’s Lea Wieser…
“I founded arkitaip together with my mother in 2018. With arkitaip, we’re combining my mum’s unique handcrafting skills – she hand-crochets our bikinis – with my urge to bring something to life with an impact: all our garments are made of European linen which is probably the most sustainable material around (and it’s so soft!)”

Carolijn Braeken On Motherhood & Her New Book
“…That’s when I knew I had to publish our story, to share it with the rest of the world, so that all those (new) mums out there would know those feelings of insecurity, doubt, and loneliness are normal, and most important: that they will go away. That they too will grow from an insecure, young mum into a strong, confident woman – just like I did. And that in the meantime, while being on that magical journey, they’re doing a great job.”

Caper Guide: Paris
With cafes on every corner and boulangeries on every street, there’s no doubt you’ll notice how much food we ate within this guide, but what can we say except: ce la vie! And pass the cheese/mussels/bread please. So without further ado, we hopped on the Eurostar and within a couple of hours, found ourselves in the City of Lights.

Childrenswear & Table Manners: In Conversation With Jessie Ware…
“I’ve always loved clothes and it just became far more fun when I became a mum, but over time I noticed how much I had bought for my daughter that she had already grown out of and I want to build a collection that would challenge the over-buying we all do and that I have totally been a perpetrator of. Then I met George (George Reddings who was the behind the Little Bird by Jools Oliver range) and it all fell into place. Between us I think we’ve come up with something really special.”

Meet The Woman Behind Cleopatra’s Bling…
“I moved to Paris at the age of 18 to follow love and to learn French. I ended up staying there for 6 years before moving to Istanbul. Each step was natural and driven by passion and love. Turkey was by far the most challenging but the most rewarding in terms of what was birthed of it: My jewellery project.”

Caper Guide: Skye
‘The Oyster Shed’ in Carbost was probably our favourite. Located on a hillside, just 1 minute from Talisker Brewery and 5 minutes from Talisker Bay (more on this stunning black sand beach below) and with unbeatable views of the Cuillins. Once inside, relax and order yourself half a dozen oysters (harvested daily from their farm in Loch Harport) and a side of chips, and rest assured that the buzzing atmosphere is absolutely reflective of just how feel-good a place this is, and how out-of-this world fresh the food is.

Josefine Ekstrand: On The Road With 2 Kids And A Family Business
“We’re a pretty ordinary family of four. We’re also an entrepreneur family, home full time with both kids and running our small business Leo Leo. Also we sold everything, bought a bus from 1963, built it into our home, drove it from Copenhagen to Portugal and now have our daily routines from our life in the south.
Maybe not so ordinary really, but deeply driven to make something of our dreams in life. “YOLO”, right?!”

New York, Raising Teens & Broccoli-Shaped Pillows With Oeuf’s Sophie Demenge
“We are in a neighbourhood that feels more like a village. The kids walk to school, we walk to the office. It’s very human scale. I don’t think that’s what comes to mind when one thinks of raising kids in NYC. Where we are it’s mostly houses, a big park, a great stoop life in the summer. The food co-op is a few blocks away. It reminds me of my youth growing up in the 6th arrondissement in Paris.”

Meet Jenny Constable AKA Jen And Cub
“That life is short and fleeting. Time is a thief and robs you of your newborn and before you know it they are almost 3!! It makes me grateful for every moment I get to spend with my little family. It’s taught me a lot about who and what matters in life and I’ve prioritised.”

The World’s First Knitted Leather Sandal Comes From Byron Bay
You may know by now that we’re big advocates of buying quality over quantity. We’re all about well-made products, the ones that last longer, and the ones we’ll love just as much next summer as we do this. And if there’s a story behind the brand (that quite literally inspires us with every step) – we’re totally sold. Oh, and they have to be super pretty, of course.
The Australian lifestyle brand, St Agni, does just this. And so well, we might add.

Caper Guide: Bath
“Just a short and pretty 15 minute walk to the Georgian city centre, and a quick 3 minute stroll to Bath’s main park, you’ll stumble across the beautiful The Bath Priory. Filled to it’s very brim with character and country house charm (think big sofas, ticking clocks and lots of art), with a modern touch and a totally indulgent L’Occtaine spa complete with indoor pool and steam room.”

Meet The Woman ‘Marbleizing’ The Wallpaper Scene…
“I have a 2 year old and 5 month old so I wake up early to get them up and spend some time with them before I leave for work. If I have time I have breakfast at home or I grab a naughty croissant on my way to work – there is an amazing French Bakery on the way called Patisserie Saint-Anne. My studio is 5 minutes walk from home and I normally get in around 8:30. Days are very varied, I like it when I can spend a day focusing on ongoing projects and our product collection but we very often have client meetings and site visits and there is always a lot going on. I work all day, often having lunch by my desk and leave around 5:30 for my children’s bath time.”

Meet Iris de Kan Of Mumazed: Airline Captain & Mother
“With my job come many manuals. Everything I need to know is written down and there are endless checklists. With Kiki, I just need to wing it and have faith in myself. Something that doesn’t always come natural. I try my very best and hope I am doing the right thing. That must be enough, or so I hope.”

The Ups & Downs Of Foster-Parenting With Janelle Velo
“Once they are placed in their first foster home, they live the rest of their lives with the label “foster kid” and unfortunately due to lack of awareness, are looked at as less-than or as a liability in their communities. When they get the space to just be kids, that’s my favourite part…”

Berber Theunissen: Photographer & Mother Of Buddy
“2,5 years ago we had an unexpected pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage. It was heartbreaking, but for us an eye opener that we really wanted a lovechild. 1,5 years later, our son Buddy was here. He brings so much joy in our life, we couldn’t be any happier. We work both from home, so we spend a lot of time together. Very grateful for that.”

Sophie Pearce: Motherhood, Travel Hacks & Life In Cabarita Beach
“I think the biggest hack is to just have realistic expectations!! Don’t try to travel like you did pre-children!
You will miss out on seeing things, you will have to have a slower paced itinerary than before but we have enjoyed that. We go with the flow more, we wake up in the morning and say to ourselves “what can we realistically be bothered doing today”. And if Poppy is tired or off in some way we tweak our plans. Just be adaptable and don’t try to jam too much into a holiday!!”
