In Conversation With Alina Sack: Founder Of ergoPouch

Cocoon Swaddle Bag 2.5 TOG in Fawn, £37.99

Today we bring you Alina Sack. Founder of the globally recognised (and loved by so many mamas), ergoPouch. Alina came up with the original renowned design when she realised she needed a solution for her first son who just. wouldn’t. sleep. (Yes many of us have been there, but not so many of us started a business in the foggy mist of it all!)

We caught up with the the down-to-earth mother, entrepreneur, Founder and designer behind the brand…

FIRST THINGS FIRST, HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE?

My favourite is a soy latte.

TELL US ABOUT ERGOPOUCH… HOW DID IT COME ABOUT?

ergoPouch came very much from my own need as a new mum. My first son, Xavier was a challenged sleeper and I became pretty distraught after being advised by sleep school coaches that he fell into a 10% of babies who failed the program. I needed to find something that would work for me and my family.

I noticed that Xavier was getting himself tangled in his sleeping bag and although I had no experience with design, I created a slim line bag that restricted his large movements. I added shoulder stretch inserts and side panels with breathable, natural fibres to make Xavier as comfortable and possible and amazingly he began to sleep through the night. From there, my creation was requested by friends and quickly founds itself into the mainstream Australian market.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY…

My kids are 12 and 10 years old (2 boys), they are very independent now, and sometimes even look after me. Our weekends are filled with soccer, friends, family and food.

TOP TRICKS FOR JUGGLING MOTHERHOOD AND BUSINESS?

I love my work, so it does blend into my overall life. I try to prioritise what is urgent and what is not. I focus on my family when home. Weekends are all about my kids. One date night with hubby every week and some alone time. But there is never enough time in the day to be fully satisfied with work or home. We always need more time at work and more time at home.

As they say, every working mother needs a wife.

FAVOURITE THING ABOUT MOTHERHOOD?

LOVE

…AND HARDEST THING?

Guilt is always prevalent. Us mums, we always put so much pressure on trying to be perfect for everyone the reality is that it’s impossible.

TOP TIPS FOR THE PARENTS OF BABIES THAT JUST. WON’T. SLEEP?!

I’ve been there in the dark depths of the sleep deprivation trenches, and it’s not easy!

Overnight sleeping is a common goal for new parents, but the reality is that a new parent is facing several years of different, changing sleep patterns with their precious babe! All babies are different and will come to the ‘sleeping through the night’ milestone eventually.

A change of mindset certainly helped me, try placing less emphasis on ‘sleeping through’ and more focus on helping your child develop healthy sleep habits and routines to set up a strong sleep foundation. And an ErgoPouch Cocoon Swaddle is definitely worth a try!

WHAT IS THE SECRET BEHIND ERGOPOUCH’S SUCCESS RATE IN INCREASING THOSE PRECIOUS ZZZ’S?

There are several things that can interrupt sleep or deter a baby or toddler from settling into a sleep routine. While we don’t have the magic answer to all these issues, what we do know is that maintaining a comfortable body temperature and position during sleep means less sleep interruptions.

We introduced a TOG rating system across all products in our range to help parents dress their child appropriately for their room temperatures. Combined with organic and natural fibre materials for breathability, the TOG system works to keep your child comfortable, warm and safe.

We’ve also taken different age and development milestones into account when designing our sleepwear. For example, a newborn baby who has a startle reflex needs the firm security and enclosed feeling of our Cocoon Swaddle, which is also stretchy to allow them small arm-movements for self-soothing in sleep. A wriggly toddler who has just learnt to walk may get frustrated with the restrictions of a sleeping bag, so our Sleep Suit Bag gives their legs freedom whilst still acting as a sleep-bag for warmth and sleep cues. A pre-schooler who is in a big bed may kick off their blankets in the night and get cold, so our padded Winter Onesie acts as a super-warm pyjama onesie that can be used without blankets.

We’ve got a sleepwear solution for all ages and milestones from newborn to 5 years.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU – BUSINESS OR PERSONAL – FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR?

Our focus as a company is to continue growth locally and internationally. We have some exciting new ranges on the horizon.

LASTLY, FAVOURITE ERGOPOUCH PIECE?

The original sleeping bag. The design has not changed since its creation 12 years ago. The fabrics differ, however shape, structure and pattern is the same.
