Katie Matilda Harland is all about flats that are not only super comfy, durable and playful but are the absolute essence of your outfit that day. From velvet to pony-skin, pompoms to python-effect leather, Katie has totally reinvented the classic brogue (think flattering, fun and a whole load of extra sass).
We caught up with Katie on hybrid shoes, factory days and exciting collabs…
TELL US ABOUT ROGUE MATILDA AND HOW IT ALL STARTED?
I entered into the shoe business following years of frustration at the inability to find the perfect flat shoe: pumps were un supportive, trainers unprofessional and traditional brogues unflattering. I thought there must be an opportunity to produce a well made flat for women that has the colour and fun or trainers and the craft and credentials of a brogue: a hybrid shoe with maximalist design and that makes you smile every time you look at your feet. I got some samples made at a factory in Portugal and after that everything snowballed somewhat(!)
TEA OR COFFEE?
Mint tea.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
There is no ‘typical day’ in this job! Some days I’m going out to Portugal and back to check on the factory, some days I’m on the floor with leather cuttings and laces designing new season style, some days I’m on email and others I’m out networking or shooting campaign pieces.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO PAIR?
This changes season on season. I’m currently living in Chunky Monkey and Black Tough Love.
HOW MANY PAIRS DO YOU OWN?
I get all the samples made in my size so I’m fortunate enough to literally have a pair of shoes for every outfit!
HOW DO YOU ‘SWITCH OFF’ AFTER A WORKING DAY?
Cooking, reading, meeting friends or watching a film.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR RM?
We have a very exciting collaboration with Freddie Harrel launching later this month… stay tuned!
