Maybe it’s just me, but recently I feel there’s a growing (and very welcomed) trend of DIY-ing it when it comes to your kids’ birthday cakes. I know this sounds obvious, and maybe we can’t call it a trend (it’s been happening since the dawn of time) but for a while there it was all about the perfectly pretty (and most instagrammable) cake made by your favourite baker, that came close to costing the same as your mortgage, I might add. The wonky homemade slightly sad looking cakes that mum stayed up all night baking started to disappear and we were left with an army of very tasteful (and tasty for that matter), tiered, “semi-naked-iced” layer cakes with a stylish singular digit candle on top. All very refined but somehow losing a bit of that nostalgic birthday party magic.
But fear not, like I said, we’ve noticed a rise in the authentic childhood birthday cake experience. The cake that we, as adults, eagerly await, as host (aka mum) proudly (and often with a touch of embarrassment) brings out her cake masterpiece to the pure delight and excited faces of her kids. Yep, that’s the kind of party we like.
And they’re just as ‘instagrammable’ by the way…
Go on, give it a crack…
