IS IT A HOTEL? NOPE, SORRY. IS IT MAGIQUE? HELL YEAH!
As much as we wish it was, Hôtel Magique is not a real hotel. It does however, bring that dream hotel and that dream holiday right into the heart of your very own abode. We speak to artist, dreamer and all-round creative, Milou. The woman behind Hôtel Magique.
HI MILOU, TELL US ABOUT HÔTEL MAGIQUE AND HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT…
8 years ago, I received my first big freelance assignment as an illustrator after receiving a call from ELLE Magazine, whilst working as a print designer for the Scotch & Soda women’s collection. After years of working for companies and magazines, the urge grew stronger to start my own brand. Not knowing what this brand should be I went on a trip to the US where I found some amazing golden momi paper in an arts and crafts store in Portland. During this trip I was thinking of ideas for an artwork to paint onto this huge piece of almost fabric-like paper, and I knew it should have a connection to hotels; to bring a hotel feeling into my home. I started combining words to the word hotel and the combination of hotel and magique – which means magic in French – started growing on me. I loved the name so much that I started thinking of the wording even more, and the many combinations you could make with this beautiful and positive word – magique, and ideas for artwork started to roll in. That’s when Hôtel Magique was born.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
One and a half years ago I fulfilled another dream next to starting my own brand, which was moving abroad, to Bali. I wake up just after sunrise and go to the beach with my boyfriend and our foster puppies, for a beach walk and a coconut. After dropping the dogs off at home, we go out for breakfast and then back home to start the day replying to emails and start designing for either Hôtel Magique or for one of the brands I am designing patterns for. Then, probably head back to the beach around sunset and get some dinner before working some more, heading out for drinks or just chilling at home.
HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE?
A soy latte is my fave on the island. Back in Amsterdam where I lived before moving to Bali, I would order a latte with oat milk everyday. I am hoping this trend will move to Asia soon!
IF HÔTEL MAGIQUE REALLY DID EXIST, WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE?
My next dream! I already have a Pinterest board ready with every detail! Definitely tropical and magique, and hopefully including a huge piece of land to help as many stray dogs as possible. I just found the cutest tile pottery shop in Jaipur, India with the most weird, and therefore awesome, drawing of a dog, which you will probably find at the entrance of Hôtel Magique!
DESCRIBE THE PERFECT ROOM IN WHICH A HÔTEL MAGIQUE PRINT MIGHT HANG?
There is no perfect room since every room is perfect! I love to see so many different people adding magique to all their different interiors. No words to describe how proud it makes you feel that people actually love your work so much it gets a place on their wall.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR HÔTEL MAGIQUE?
I love collaborations as you get to work together with other amazing creatives and their ideas to create new magique together. So very excited about more international collaborations that lay ahead this year. And exploring new products as I have way more ideas for designs, not only on paper.
