Let’s be honest, the North Sea isn’t the most beautiful body of water in the world, however, there’s no denying the charm and draw of a pretty little British seaside town – particularly, Southwold. It’s one of those friendly places that it’s rare to find someone that’s only visited once. Just two hours from London — situated in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, complete with pretty beaches, a picturesque harbour, quaint shops, beach huts and plenty of pubs, Southwold is just the right recipe for a weekend away…
STAY
Situated right in the heart of the action, overlooking the Town Square – which, I might add, was looking super festive and filled with Christmas trees, sits The Swan Hotel. Owned and run by Adnams, a family-run brewery and distillery, The Swan Hotel building dates back to the 1600’s. Exquisitely styled with a distinct ‘Wes Anderson’ feel. Think: bold colour schemes, fun wallpapers and a satisfying symmetrical layout within each room.
From the restaurant to the bar to the drawing room, there’s space to wander yet it’s got a homely and intimate feel. This is the obvious choice for a treaty weekend away – very family friendly and in some rooms, dog friendly too!
Whether you opt for an ‘Excellent’, ‘Fabulous’ or ‘Outstanding’ room, each one features incredibly comfortable beds as well as the renowned Swan Tall Boy – filled with everything you could need from a Nespresso machine, 40” smart TV, a wireless speaker, a mini bar and all sorts of other treats. This is coastal luxury at it’s best.
EAT
Dine in The Still Room for the décor, the cocktails and the dishes that are as delicious as they are pretty (try and say that quickly!) This elegant restaurant is perfect for large gatherings and parties as well as intimate lunches and dinners. Expect outstanding service, seasonal ingredients and an exciting menu.
Or, opt for a more casual feel in The Tap Room and experience over 12 different Adnams beers (over the course of the weekend, of course!) Think: quality ingredients, unique flavours and good, tasty and super satisfying dishes. Perfect for a quick drink, light bite or long lunch.
… And then there’s the afternoon tea. Served in the Drawing Room, relax into comfy chairs and velvet sofas and enjoy three tiers of treats. This is another must.
OTHER EATS:
The Little Fish and Chip Shop – Hands down, one of the best we’ve had.
The Crown – Also part of the Adnams’ tribe. Delicious food, cosy atmosphere, a roaring fire in the winter (HERE)
The Two Magpies – Sourdough pizza nights every Saturday (HERE)
DO
It’s easy to sink into a beautiful routine of eating, drinking and reading books you’ve wanted to delve into for months all under the hotel’s pretty roof, but when you do eventually venture out, there’s plenty to see, do and get stuck into…
A tour of the brewery and distillery is a must – have a go at making your very own bottle of gin to take home with you. Tuck into coffee and a cake (or two, or three!) at the popular Two Magpies (believe us when we say this bakery is through the roof). Wander the town and browse the shops. We’d particularly like to mention Collen & Clare (HERE) – All your favourite labels under one roof and super helpful, friendly staff.
