Ask anyone what they’re doing for New Year’s Eve and you’ll hear ‘urgh, it’s overrated’, ‘can’t get a reservation anyway’ and the most common response ‘staying in with my dog/cat/baby’… I feel sorry for New Year’s Eve. It’s really started to get a bad rep and it’s not really the Eve’s fault now, is it?
Staying in should not, I repeat should not, be despondently regarded as the only option, rather embraced. Particularly if your kids are involved…
Here’s what you should do:
DINNER: It doesn’t really matter what you eat (whether you cook, order take-out, pile up the cheese, continue your current staple diet of leftovers with pickles) but what does matter is presentation. Get out your prettiest plates, the linen napkins, most party-ish table cloth, and those sequin table decorations that are nothing but a pain to clear up but somehow make the whole scene feel decedent. NOTES: (and this part is important) don’t feel restricted to the kitchen table. Lay it out like a picnic in front of the fireplace/the telly/the Christmas tree, it turns an everyday supper into something a little magical. Your kids will love it.
DRESSING UP: By this we mean, pop on your favourite dress, heels, a dash of shimmery eye shadow and let your kids do the same (yes, this means letting them clip-clop around the kitchen all evening in your most precious heeled Cowboys).
STAYING UP: We scoured the internet for NYE ideas, games and activities and found the following: Cards (naturally), karaoke, dance competitions, talent shows, time capsules (quite like this one), indoor sparklers (age dependent), makeovers (particularly on Dad)…
PS. It’s totally fine to admit that you’re secretly counting down to bedtime more than you are the New Year!
Happy New Year to you all!
