There’s the theory that giving a child a pet (big or small) instills a sense of responsibility and encourages nurturing and affection in them from a young age. Who are we kidding? Yes, it does all of the above but the main reason we end up bringing ‘Cornflake’ home is to quieten what became a never-ending conversation, a constant battle and a steady flow of whinging about various friends with various pets. It goes without saying that the parents have got to be on board with the idea of a pet before committing (at the end of the day it’ll be you clearing out the hutch, taking ‘Mervin’ to the vet, digging holes and throwing funerals) but the delight it’ll bring your kiddos is (usually) worth it and like we said: a right of passage.
We’ve rounded up a handful of guinea pig inspired goodies to help you a) bide your time before giving them the real deal or b) surprise them with said goodie and take them straight to the pet shop (they’ll never forget this day, believe you me).
