Where the mucus goes: Suction draws it through the tip into the clear collection chamber. The umbrella valve is the part that holds it there, sitting between the mucus and the motor. There is no filter to buy, which means the valve and the drying routine below are doing that job instead.
The routine that protects the motor: Empty the chamber right after use. Rinse the tip and the umbrella valve. Then run the unit with warm water to clear the inside out. Do this every single time, not once a week, and let every part air-dry completely before it goes back together.
Three levels: Start at level 1 and move up only as far as you actually need. The lowest setting handles more than people expect once saline has done its work.
Saline first, always: Dried mucus will not move for any aspirator. A saline spray a moment beforehand is the difference between a full chamber and an empty one.
If suction drops off: Reseat the umbrella valve and check it is clean and dry, then check the tip is sealing against the nostril instead of sitting loosely in it. Those two things account for most of it.
Cleaning: Check the manual before putting any part in a dishwasher, since the parts are not all treated the same way.
