Hospital gowns open at the back, tie badly and belong to the hospital. This is the one you bring for the part afterward, when you are in the room for two days with a newborn on your chest.
What it is built for: Nursing and skin-to-skin, mainly. The front opens without the whole gown coming off, which matters at 3am and matters more if you have had abdominal surgery and cannot lift your arms over your head comfortably. Snaps rather than ties, so nothing works itself loose, and no tag at the neck.
During labor: The snap closures let panels open for monitoring, IV lines and back access, so a nurse is not asking you to change. Whether you can wear it at all is up to your hospital. Policies vary, and hospitals typically require you to wear their gown for a C-section. Ask at your tour rather than finding out on the day.
After a C-section: This is where it earns its place. No waistband anywhere near the incision, and nothing to pull over your head.
Sizing: Use the size chart; guessing from your usual size will not work here. The cut is deliberately relaxed to leave room for a pregnant belly and for postpartum swelling, so if you want a closer fit, consider going down a size.
Fabric and care: 100% viscose, which is soft and drapey and unhappy with heat. Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, with similar colors. No bleach, no fabric softener. Hang or lay flat to dry. If you must press it, use a low iron. Wash it once before the hospital bag so it is soft and ready.
